This week on the PGA Tour, the players are headed to Detroit. Before I get into who I like for this week, lets talk about Jackson Koivun.

Been following him since his freshman year at Auburn, where he swept all four of the National Player of The Year awards and helped his Tigers secure a National Championship. Watching that week, all I thought was who is going to beat this Auburn team. They went on to win another National Championship this year in dominating fashion beating UCLA 4-1. Two in three years and Koivun is why Auburn for years to come will continue to be the vocal point of college golf.

Obviously his first official start on the tour did not go as planned as many thought. A missed cut at the John Deere and then he bounced back at the ISCO with a T-10. I mean people have been all over him since starting and the 3M Open with a weaker field was a huge opportunity for him. I found it impressive that he continued to play steady golf on the back nine with World No.1 making a run. It just shows the kind of grit and determination the young star possesses. Excited for the future of the PGA tour with him becoming one of the best players in the world. We’ll talk about it later in this post, but potential Presidents Cup pick…

Rocket MOrtgage

Another week of a golf course redesign. Detroit Golf Club, a Donald Ross designed course, went under some rearrangements after Aldrich Potgieter lifted the trophy last Summer. Changes included lifting a couple of the greens, while changing the design of some of the bunkers. They also added some fescue or wispy grass around the course, which for me I love. From the pictures, I love what architect Tyler Rae has done. It will be interesting to see what adjustments the veterans make. By the time the weekend comes it will be who is putting and ball striking the best. A week where a Jackson Koivun is not at a disadvantage for seeing a golf course for the first time.

Lets get into some players that I like this week.

Jackson Suber is long shot this week after having a rough week at the 3M Open. Besides that, the last month has been very solid from Suber and someone I like in down the road. T-28 in the Open, T-6 at the John Deere, and a T-4 at the RBC in the past month or so. I feel he starts out well on Thursday’s, and being top 20 in approach to green I think he will come out firing. If he wants to contend on the weekend, his driver and putter have to cooperate.

Ryan Gerard is another guy who I’m starting to absolutely love. Probably because of his move and I aspire to be a pull cutter like him. Gerard is having a good season, but has not yet won in 2026. 5 top 10’s this year, which include 3 being T-2’s, while also coming off a T-9 at the Open. A very solid year for Gerard, but is looking to breakthrough still in 2026.

The theme so far has been ball strikers and I will continue this trend with Jake Knapp. Becoming some people’s favorite golf swing. A swing that is smooth and powerful at the same time. Having a solid season with 5 Top 10’s, while also coming off a final round 62 in Minnesota. One of the best ball strikers on the tour and its a week where the best ball strikers will win. Another guy looking for his first win in 2026 to conclude a strong season.

The last two are guys can flat-out score. First being Russell Henley, where the guy is incredibly accurate off the tee. Putting yourself in good positions to score this week is a must. He can also get incredibly hot with the flat stick and looks to continue his very strong season this week.

The second being my favorite guy on the tour. Maybe because he’s a local and went to my high school or maybe he can flat out ball. Chris Gotterup coming off a solid two events overseas and a Win at the John Deere is in incredible form this year. Looks to stay hot in the blistering heat of Detroit this week. If he can put himself in position on a Sunday, watch out!

A good mix of players, some top 10 OWGR guys, and some guys that I have become attracted to over the past month or so. Unlike in Minnesota this weeks stop is filled with some of the best players and I think with the changes to the golf course it will be very entertaining.

Presidents Cup

With only 4 weeks of the season left, it is time to start having a conversation of what the President’s Cup Team could look like. Currently the top 6 looks like:

1. Scottie Scheffler
2. Cameron Young
3. Russell Henley
4. Sam Burns
5. Ben Griffin
6. Collin Morikawa

Besides Ben Griffin all of these guys should and will be on the team. Griffin who I like and think his story is awesome, but I just don’t think he has a Ryder/Presidents Cup spirit in him. If he ends up on the team I hope he proves me wrong, but I’m just not a big fan in this setting.

Obviously the last 4 weeks of the season are huge implications towards the standings and I will check back in when the Tour Championship is completed. For the guys that are not in the top 6 there are a couple must haves for me, which include:

1. Chris Gotterup
2. Xander Schauffele
3. Justin Thomas
4. Wyndham Clark

The other two is where it gets tricky for Brandt Snedeker. Like I said before, there has been a ton of chatter with Jackson Koivun. And I think I’m on the side of that because the event is match play, where he has been dominate throughout his college career. He has that competitive spirit in him that you need for an event like this. The last spot is where I get stuck with JJ Spaun, Akshay Bhatia, Patrick Cantlay, and I’ll throw Ryan Gerard in the mix. Any of them I do not mind, but it is a tough decision for Brandt when the time comes.

U.S. Amatuer

My favorite week of the year is almost here. Maybe not week, but definitely my favorite golf tournament. Not only do I love watching these young guns fire at flags all day long, but we get to see some venues that the tour has not stopped at in a long time. This year it is at the prestigious Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania. A club that has one of the coolest logos and “flags” in the game, while also being a top 100 course in the world.

I just find this week to be incredibly cool. Between the up and coming talent that have some incredible golf swings, the venues that they play at, and of course the winner is decided by match play. My favorite way to play and watch the game. A week where the golf obsessed person should watch. With it being only an hour and half from me, I have been thinking of going. The fan experience looks immaculate on TV with no ropes and just being able to follow the groups freely.
